He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear [and worship] the Lord his God by obeying (keeping foremost in his thoughts and actively doing) all the terms of these instructions and decrees.
This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens [by a false sense of self-importance and self-reliance]. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.
~ Deuteronomy 17: 19 – 20 NLT, AMP ~
Hello fully accepted one, God’s beloved! Hello king! Excuse me for stating the obvious, in Christ, you are a king, and the guidelines are for you.
Guidelines for a King, which starts at verse 14, is a set of instructions God gives the Israelites regarding their future kings. The copy referred to is the scroll of instructions given at that time, but we can apply this to the broader context of the totality of the Word of God.
My highlights in these verses are:
- Keep a copy of the Word.
- Read it daily all the days of my life.
- Obeying involves keeping the Word at the forefront of my thoughts and actively doing it.
- Daily reading helps me obey God.
- Daily reading keeps me from becoming self-important and self-reliant.
- Daily reading keeps me from turning away from God.
- My daily reading and its fruits has benefits for the future generations in my bloodline.
What have been your key takeaways?
Nurturing as I am being nurtured,
Thank you for joining me and reading, I hope this has spurred you to explore the Scripture cited in this post further and grow in your knowledge of God.
If I had only one chance to speak to you, or if these were the last words I ever got to speak about life I would say, “Growth is a gradual process and I admonish you to be content with progressive knowledge and revelation; Embrace the concept of being unoffended by the Bible, for it is through this mindset that you can face the 'challenging' and uncomfortable aspects of its teachings. Remind yourself of your commitment and persevere, knowing that as your comprehension of Christ's boundless love for you expands, the pieces will start falling into place. On the other side of your choice lies God's response to your receptive heart."

And I’m more in awe of that when you look at this passage in its context, when God gave the Israelites these guidelines they did not have a king yet – but God knew the future and that they would eventually ask for a king. It makes me ponder that whatever I am going through today (even of my own making and a result of disobedience), God knew it, it doesn’t surprise Him and He provisioned for it. Yes! He provisioned the Grace for your downfalls too, through the death of His Son overall and through moments like these where He provides guidelines ahead of time. “I know you are going to ask for a king even though I’ve told you not to, and because I don’t force My will on you I will still plan and provision for moments when you choose your own way.
Now this isn’t an excuse to choose our own ways and repeatedly disobey God; this should show us how imperfect and in desperate need of God we are. We desperately need God to save us from ourselves!
